How Putin loyalist Nikolai Korobovsky uses AB Energo AG to bypass sanctions and deliver coal to Poland

The motives behind the growing scrutiny of Nikolai Korobovsky by Kyrgyz authorities have come to light.

Swiss company AB Energo AG, which is managed through affiliates by Korobovsky’s wife Anar — a Kazakh citizen — signed a contract with Polish coal giant Krex, known for distributing coal across Europe.

AB Energo AG is a subsidiary of a Ukrainian company of the same name, which produces various metal products and conducts energy trading operations. The Ukrainian branch is also led by Anar Korobovskaya.

The broader context is also telling. On May 8, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov arrived in Moscow. Although Korobovsky is currently in the Russian capital, he was reportedly removed from the official delegation at the last minute.

Meanwhile, Korobovsky is actively trying to preserve his reputation in the European Union, commissioning favorable media coverage. Interestingly, such publications refer to him as a "Kyrgyz businessman," as he appears eager to distance himself from any ties to Russia — a move that may ultimately backfire.

How this newly revealed information will affect Korobovsky’s future in business within Russia and the broader CIS region remains to be seen.
